Dental Wellness Visit in Ypsilanti, MI

A thorough cleaning, a careful exam, and a calm place to take care of your health.

At The Dental Spa, a routine visit is about more than checking a box twice a year. Your dental wellness visit is a chance to protect your teeth and gums, catch small concerns while they’re easy to treat, and take a quiet hour for your overall well-being, all in an office designed to feel more like a spa than a dental practice.

Your Teeth Cleaning and Checkup, Reimagined

A dental wellness visit brings together everything you need to stay healthy in one appointment: a professional teeth cleaning with one of our experienced hygienists, a comprehensive exam with Dr. Ryan, and digital X-rays when they’re needed.

Whether you’ve been with us for decades, just moved to Ypsilanti, or haven’t been to a dentist in a while, you’re welcome here. We’ll meet you where you are, without judgment, and build a plan that fits your mouth and your life.

What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?

Knowing what to expect makes any appointment easier. Most dental cleanings take between 30 minutes and an hour. Here’s how your visit typically unfolds:

  1. Welcome and health check-in. Your hygienist asks about any changes in your health, medications, or concerns since your last visit.
  2. A look at your teeth and gums. We assess the condition of your gums and note anything Dr. Ryan should take a closer look at.
  3. Plaque and tartar removal. Using hand instruments or an ultrasonic scaler as appropriate, your hygienist gently removes buildup from your tooth surfaces and along the gumline, including the hard-to-reach areas that brushing and flossing can miss.
  4. Polishing. Your teeth are polished to remove remaining buildup, leaving them feeling clean and smooth.
  5. Home-care coaching. Your hygienist shares simple, personal tips on brushing, flossing, and anything else that will help between visits.

Your exam with Dr. Ryan. After your cleaning, Dr. Ryan reviews your teeth, gums, and overall oral health, talks through what he sees, and answers your questions. If anything feels uncomfortable at any point, just tell us. We’ll adjust.

What We Check at Your Dental Exam

After your cleaning, Dr. Ryan performs a comprehensive exam. Catching a concern early often means simpler, more conservative treatment. He will evaluate:

  • Tooth decay, cracks, and other signs of damage
  • The health of your gums and the bone that supports your teeth
  • Existing fillings, crowns, and other restorations
  • Your bite and any signs of tooth wear
  • Changes in your medical history that may affect your oral health
  • Your lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, throat, and surrounding tissues for signs of oral cancer

How Often Should You Get Your Teeth Cleaned?

For most patients, we recommend a dental wellness visit every six months. That rhythm is frequent enough to stop buildup from becoming a problem and to catch changes early, without overdoing it.

The American Dental Association supports tailoring visit frequency to each person’s risk, so your ideal schedule may be different. You may benefit from more frequent visits if you:

  • Have a history of gum disease or frequent cavities
  • Have diabetes or other conditions that affect healing and gum health
  • Smoke or use tobacco
  • Experience dry mouth, including from certain medications
  • Notice bleeding, swelling, or tenderness in your gums

At your visit, Dr. Ryan and your hygienist will tell you what interval makes sense for you, and why.

Gum Health: The Heart of a Wellness Visit

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. Early gum disease (gingivitis) is often painless, which is why it’s so easy to miss. Watch for gums that bleed when you brush or floss, look red or swollen, or a bad taste or breath that doesn’t go away.

Research has linked gum disease with other health conditions, including diabetes and heart disease, which is one reason we take gum health seriously at every visit. If your exam shows you need more than a routine cleaning, Dr. Ryan will explain what he’s seeing and walk you through your options. For patients who need ongoing gum care, our Adult Perio Wellness Package includes periodontal maintenance three times a year.

Dental Wellness Visit FAQs

Does a dental cleaning hurt?

Most patients find cleanings comfortable. You may feel pressure or some sensitivity, especially if your gums are inflamed or it’s been a while since your last visit. Let your hygienist know and we’ll adjust.

The cleaning typically takes 30 minutes to an hour, followed by your exam with Dr. Ryan. New patients should plan for a little extra time for X-rays and paperwork.

A cleaning, performed by your hygienist, removes plaque and tartar from your teeth. The exam, performed by Dr. Ryan, evaluates your teeth, gums, bite, existing dental work, and signs of oral cancer. At The Dental Spa, they happen in the same visit.

Not necessarily. Bitewing X-rays are typically taken once a year, panoramic X-rays every three to five years, and others only as needed. Dr. Ryan decides based on your individual needs.

Not at all, and you won’t be judged. We’ll start with an exam to see what your teeth and gums need. If you need more than a routine cleaning, Dr. Ryan will explain your options.
